In 2010, FriedrichstadtPalast will embark on a new chapter in modern show entertainment. Yma (pronounced: ee-ma) is your host, a dream of a woman, who with style, wit and humour takes you through her world of seduction and cultivated madness.

Can one fall in love with a show? Oh yes.

The follow-up to Berlin’s most successful show, Qi, is definite and FriedrichstadtPalast is disclosing what is presently its best-kept secret: ‘Yma – too beautiful to be true’ is the name of the new show, which will celebrate its world premiere on 2 September at Europe’s biggest and most modern show palace.

Yma (pronounced: ee-ma) is the name of the – in all objectivity – stunningly beautiful and incredibly likable host. With style, wit and humor, Yma takes viewers through her world of seduction, aesthetic provocation and cultivated madness.

“Yma is a dream woman in every sense of the word. Men love her, so do women. Her world is beautiful, vibrant and exciting, but in its dazzling beauty simply too beautiful to be real. But that is exactly the point of a show that has such a revitalizing effect on our guests. The everyday, the banal and commonplace – there’s no space for that in great show entertainment. As a woman, Yma is a dream, her world is without conventions – and yet everything is within easy reach. It is solely up to us and our ability to let go, whether we immerse ourselves in the stage or Yma immerses herself in us,” says the director of FriedrichstadtPalast and producer of the new show, Dr. Berndt Schmidt.

The show’s authors are Jürgen Nass and Roland Welke, who already in 2008 with ‘Qi – Berlin’s biggest show’ delivered a masterpiece that was also celebrated by the media. The attendance figures substantiate that: In a period of only 10 months, more than 400,000 enthusiastic visitors saw the show. “With Qi we arrived in the 21st century. With Yma, the ‘revuelution’ at FriedrichstadtPalast continues and is taken to the next level,” says Schmidt.

A top personality is representing the huge step forward in aesthetics: Michael Michalsky, one of Germany’s most successful and influential designers, will, as creative show-couture designer, create Yma’s exciting wardrobe and the dancers’ and artists’ sexy outfits. Michalsky is known as a high-fashion designer beyond Germany’s borders and combines classic style with streetwear influences. “I think it’s great that Michael Michalsky was so enthusiastic about this show project. I like his approach to glamour, style, luxury – and bodies. With Yma, the palace will become much more daring again and Michalsky is our first choice for that,” says Schmidt.

“The biggest stage in the world, 60 very attractive dancers, highly gifted artists and a magnificent diva named Yma offer an incredibly broad scope for creative exploration. Apart from Las Vegas, this ultimate extravaganza in stage glitter and glamour can only be found here in Berlin,” explains Michael Michalsky. “Of course, it’s a big challenge to design more than 500 costumes, which have to be very different from image to image, but I love this project and am already knee-deep in inspiring collages, images and sketches.”
